NO TO THE HIGH SPEED TRAIN (AVE) TRAVELLING

UNDER THE CENTRE OF BARCELONA

1. Current situation

AVE PEL LITORAL platform is a legal local organisation which has managed to fill the balconies of Barcelona centre and elsewhere with more than 4,500 banners, as well as hanging a huge 80 square meter banner in Països Catalans Square, to demonstrate the complete rejection of Barcelona regarding the current project of the high Speed train travelling through the centre of the city.

2. What is the main problem?

The current project, with the approval of the Catalan government and Barcelona council, is that a tunnel, only 70 cms from the foundation of “Sagrada Familia Church” and little more from the “Casa Mila” (La Pedrera), both of which have been declared World Heritage Sites by UNESCO, will endanger the future of both sites, according to the head architect of the Sagrada Familia church.

Furthermore, this project will directly affect more than 50,000 homes in Provença street, Mallorca street and Diagonal Avenue.

3. What is our proposal?

Our proposal, and that of a number of numerous prestigious independent technical experts, is that there are far safer and more economical alternatives to locating the AVE via the city centre (connecting Sants and Sagrera stations).

Our proposal is not to endanger either those buildings listed in World Heritage or the life of many Barcelona citizens either, when the AVE could be easily diverted to:

1. El Vallès (in the north of Barcelona), a safer and cheaper option, and for its surface size.

2. The Coast (Litoral Option), which already has a 2.5 km tunnel built.

3. With Shuttle trains, recommended by many professionals and which already exists in several European countries.

Our proposal takes into account People’s safety while saving more than 200 million euros of European citizens’ money, most of which comes from European Union Funds, in a completely useless project.

4. What are our expectations from you?
We hope that you will help us to inform others about this attack on our World Heritage and that you will push World and European organisations to oppose this tunnel project, because it is unnecessary, dangerous and expensive.
